Backing early career medical researchers: a philanthropic program for enhancing capacity in Victoria

This impact analysis evaluates the Jack Brockhoff Foundation's Early Career Medical Researcher scheme, a philanthropic initiative designed to strengthen Victoria’s capacity for world class health research by supporting the development of talented early career scientists. Introduced in 2016, the scheme aims to fill a critical funding niche by enabling postdoctoral researchers to pursue original research ideas and gain experience in leading independent projects, support often not covered by traditional salary based research roles. Aligned with the Foundation’s strategic priority of Backing Big Ideas, the program reflects both public policy goals and the Foundation’s commitment to measurable, focused impact. This analysis examines the scheme’s effectiveness between 2017 and 2023 (excluding 2021), drawing on bibliographic data and self-reported outcomes to assess how the grants have contributed to researchers’ careers and Victoria’s broader research ecosystem.
